Up until this book, virtually all of my research was done by
writing or phoning experts. Hyenas marked the first time I used
cyberspace for serious research. What fun to talk to guitarists
("Why do many guitar players leave a long bit of string hanging off
in the air at the tuning end of the guitar?"), architects ("Why do
buildings have ledges?"), physicists ("Why do two cereal flakes that
are floating in milk tend to float toward each other once they get
less than an inch apart?"), and conductors ("In marching bands, why
are woodwinds placed behind the brass when they are likely to be
drowned out by the louder brass?").
