I Wish I Were in Cambridge, Massachusetts...
...so that I could have attended the IgNoble Awards. I would especially like to have cheered on Dr. Piers Barnes and Nic Svenson for their groundbreaking research in mathematics, "for calculating the number of photographs you must take to (almost) ensure that nobody in a group photo will have their eyes closed." We are a little peeved that Ivan R. Schwab, of the University of California Davis, and the late Philip R.A. May of the University of California Los Angeles, won the ornithology award for exploring and explaining why woodpeckers don't get headaches. We'd like to think that they were in part inspired by our discussion of same in Why Do Dogs Have Wet Noses?
And if I were in Cambridge tomorrow, Saturday, I could attend the IgNoble informal lectures.
