Bright Leaves

May I recommend a film that I haven't seen?

The PBS documentary series, POV, has snagged the broadcast premiere of Bright Leaves, the documentary about tobacco directed by Ross McElwee.

Don't expect a Michael Moore-type polemic against the industry, but rather a more personal, ambiguous, and gently ironic meditation on the allure of the deadly plant that once enriched his family.

Bright Leaves is airing at 10:00 P.M. tonight in many markets, but be sure and check for your local area. If you enjoy Bright Leaves, you might want to check out Sherman's March, McElwee's brilliant and hilarious documentary about the Civil War and his equally catastrophic love life.
